Challenge
Ride comfort has long been treated as a purely subjective sensation. It gets described differently by each person, as soft or firm, but is hard to see or to compare objectively between vehicles.
The automotive review creator Motline wanted to show this sensation in a form viewers could understand with their own eyes. That required measuring a vehicle's motion while driving, turning it into data, and visualizing that data so it could be read intuitively.
Approach
Starting from the first ideation session with Motline, Alpaon built a first prototype that measures the shaking and vibration a vehicle experiences while driving and represents it visually.
The measured data was turned into graphs and visuals, so differences in ride comfort could be seen on screen. By placing different vehicles or driving conditions side by side, we confirmed a way to talk about ride comfort from data rather than subjective impression.
Outcome
Through the first prototype, we visualized ride comfort as data and tested it in real driving, confirming the feasibility of the approach.
The video below captures the process, from Alpaon and Motline first meeting and discussing the idea through to testing the first prototype.
